Legacy of Love: A Letter to my Manchild

Dear Son,

You deserve the very best
That life has to offer you.
I only hope that I was able to give
You at least a significant portion of that.
Oftentimes I can't even begin to tell you
How much that I love you.
I loved you while you were still growing
Inside my womb, moving, kicking and
Letting the outside world know that you were here.

Before you were even conceived
I loved you and I imagined your bold,
Brilliant and beautiful face.
I know that young men seldom refer to
Themselves as beautiful--
Somehow society has identified this
Quality as feminine.
But the beauty that I see is far beyond the
Outward appearance, Although your tall stature and radiant eyes
Is a sight for anyone to bask in.

As I gaze into your eyes, my son,
I see the beauty of your strength,
Courage, and determination.
When I look at you my heart is overjoyed and
Touched with a hint of sorrow all at once.
I am happy because I know that you have
The potential for greatness to change this world
And make it a better place--
To reach your destiny.

I sometimes feel sad because
I wonder if you will be able to endure
The pains and pitfalls of life.
But I realize that without the trying times
You could never grow to reach your fullest potential,
So I don't worry about you
Because I know that you will take hold of that inner strength
Which compels you to stand up and be strong.

Son, I continue to want the best for you.
I don't have fame, glory or riches but
I do have something more precious than
Money could ever buy.
I give to you the true wealth of this land--
A legacy of love that has been with you
From your very existence.
"Now abideth faith, hope, love, these three;
But the greatest of these is love."

While there is breath in my body,
I give you my faith; I give you my hope,
And I give you my heart,
That is flooded with love for you my son.
Love, not because of what you've done
Or what you've given me but
Love for who you are.
I am proud of the man that you've become
And the principles which you've embraced.
I know that at times you've needed
A man's guidance and hand in your life
But all things happen for a reason.
Throughout the years I've prayed for our Creator
To give me the strength and wisdom
To instill those principles and values into you.

I have given my all.
So son, as you continue to
Mature, grow stronger
And face the world head on--
Know that there isn't anything that you can't achieve
The only thing that you can't do in this world
Is Quit.
With a foundation built upon love
You can conquer any battle,
Withstand any storm,
And soar above any mountain
And the world will be a better place because
You have passed by this way.
